Celebrating International Women's Day with Moyee

On this International Women's Day, we at Moyee Coffee are proud to celebrate the incredible contributions of women around the world. From the coffee fields of Ethiopia to our office in Dublin, women play a vital role in every aspect of our business and supply chain.

At Moyee, we believe that empowering women is not just the right thing to do; it's also essential for building a more sustainable and equitable future. That's why we're committed to supporting women at every level of our organization especially where it is most needed.

In the vast fields of agriculture across Africa, women are the unsung heroes, contributing up to 70% of the labor. Despite their significant role, they face systemic inequalities, earning 40% less for their efforts compared to men. Cultural and religious barriers further compound these disparities, denying women equal access to essential resources like farming inputs, technology, advice, credit, and markets.

Whether tending to corn, coffee, cocoa, or other crops, women encounter unequal treatment and limited opportunities. Yet, the potential impact of leveling the playing field is staggering. If women were granted the same opportunities as men, they could boost yields by nearly 40%, producing enough food to feed an additional 150 million people—a monumental achievement that could rival the output of multiple countries combined.

In our journey at Moyee, we've witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by female farmers and we had to step up! Over the last few years we have provided access to our female farmers to mobile phones, a crucial tool for communication, information, and pricing. Recognizing the importance of financial inclusion, we took steps to empower these women by setting up bank accounts for nearly 100 of our female farmers, bringing banking services directly to our washing stations.

One inspiring example of female empowerment in our coffee production is the Mujeres Microlot. Crafted by 124 remarkable women, this microlot represents more than just exceptional coffee; it embodies the resilience and determination of female farmers. From crafting organic fertilizers to participating in entrepreneurship workshops, these women redefine the role of coffee producers, championing sustainability and innovation on their farms. Proceeds from the sale of COMAL Mujeres coffee fund a mobile medical and dental clinic, directly benefiting women's health in the community. By supporting this initiative, you're not only savoring exceptional coffee but also contributing to a cause that uplifts and empowers women.

On this International Women's Day, we're proud to celebrate the achievements of women everywhere and reaffirm our commitment to gender equality. Together, we can create a world where all women have the opportunity to reach their full potential, both in the coffee industry and beyond.
