Background story

Sakami Farm, located in Berbeton at the foot of Mt. Elgon, thrives at an altitude of 1,800m above sea level. This former frontier is home to the famous Mt. Elgon National Park, known for its salt-licking elephants and mineral-rich caves. The farm enjoys rich volcanic soils, a favourable tropical climate as well as fresh water flowing from the underground springs and rivers, creating the perfect conditions for our specialty Arabica coffee, Haas avocados and Macadamia.

We are committed to preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainability. The farm has a protected wetland spanning 6 hectares, that not only provides a year-round water source but also supports a diverse ecosystem, attracting birds, frogs, small gazelles, aardvarks, monkeys, wild rabbits, and crested cranes. We employ solar-generated power for a majority of activities on the farms.

Processing Method Used

Natural processing, where the ripe coffee cherries are handpicked and then spread out to dry in the sun with the fruit still intact. This drying process, which can take several weeks, ensures that the cherries reach the desired moisture content. Once fully dried, the outer fruit layer is removed through hulling to reveal the green coffee beans. This method results in a fuller-bodied coffee with pronounced sweetness and fruity flavours, offering a rich and complex taste profile.

Why is this coffee so special?

Led by one of Kenya’s pioneering female coffee farmers, Sakami Coffee is part of a growing collective that is redefining the future of coffee in the North Rift.

In 2021, Sakami Coffee successfully penetrated the European market by exporting 100 bags of their coffee through the Dutch importer This Side Up. This partnership was facilitated by the European Union – East African Community Market Access Upgrade Programe (MARKUP), which supports East African agribusinesses in accessing European markets.

Additionally, in 2022, Sakami Coffee expanded its collaboration to include four other women-run farms. The women's group was officially recognised by the  International Women's Coffee Alliance as a new chapter: The North of the Rift Women In Coffee. Sakami also invested in environmental sustainability by purchasing 3,100 native trees to create a buffer zone between the coffee farm and a nearby stream, providing windbreakers, protection against soil erosion, and enhancing the farm's aesthetics.

These accomplishments highlight Sakami Coffee's commitment to quality, sustainability, and community empowerment within the coffee industry.
