Background story

I grew up on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, where my parents cared for our coffee trees every day. As a child, I spent my time playing among the trees, enjoying the freedom and beauty of the farm. For us, it was a joyful playground. For our parents, it was a mix of pride and worry. Tending to the coffee was a fulfilling way to work the land, but the income was never guaranteed. Some years, the harvest brought in enough money; other years, it did not, and we rarely knew why.

In 2020, when the world shut down because of the pandemic, I returned to the farm. With more knowledge and access to information than before, together with my partner, we joined the family and revived a farm that had been idle for years. Together, we worked on growing coffee with new hope and excitement. We believe that coffee can be a source of a dignified livelihood for our family and our community.

Why is this coffee so special?

We grow Batian and Ruiru 11 coffee at 1,950 meters in Kaisagat, right on a beautiful slope bordered by a river and a forest. At the lower boundary of our farm, families of endangered colobus monkeys’ call home – the inspiration for our name.

Our farm is not just a place where coffee grows—it’s a source of livelihood and stability for our community. Started in 2021, we have a dedicated team of four members who have been with us from the beginning. Their hard work and commitment have made our farm a success and provided stability and dignified livelihood for their families.

Due to deforestation in many areas of our neighbourhood, we are also dedicating part of our income from coffee to reforestation efforts. Our goal is to safeguard the home of the colobus monkeys and help restore the natural balance in our community.
