Meet Ka Irima: a washed Kenyan microlot from Samwel, a third-generation coffee farmer in Central Kenya.
At 1,850 metres in the fertile volcanic soils at the foot of the Aberdare Mountains, cool temperatures give the coffee cherries time to slowly develop flavour. The result: a juicy cup with pear, blackberry and a fresh, medium acidity.
Grown at: Ka Irima, Gatanga, Kenya
Roasted in: Kenya
Roast: Light
Process: Washed
Varieties: SL28, SL34 & Ruiru 11
Tasting notes: Pear • Blackberry • Medium acidity • Juicy body
As always with our Microlots: when it's gone, it's really gone.
MEET SAMWEL
Samwel is the third generation of his family to grow coffee — though farming wasn't always the plan. After studying and working in marketing, he returned to the family farm, combining three generations of coffee knowledge with modern practices and plenty of ambition. His focus: better coffee, more quality, more value created at the source.
COFFEE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
For Samwel, Ka Irima is about more than coffee. He works with a team of young people, showing them that coffee can be a career and a passion — not just a tradition inherited from parents. By involving young people on the farm, he's helping build the next generation of coffee farmers. We're all for it.
WHAT IS WASHED?
After harvesting, the fruit is removed from the cherries, then the beans are fermented, washed and carefully dried. The result is a clean, bright cup where the coffee itself takes centre stage — plenty of fruit, fresh acidity, juicy body.
SL28 • SL34 • RUIRU 11
Three varieties, one small microlot. SL28 and SL34 are iconic Kenyan varieties known for fruitiness and complexity; Ruiru 11 adds a modern twist. Together they create a lively cup with sweet pear and juicy blackberry — fruity without getting funky, fresh without tasting sour. Just a damn good Kenyan coffee.
