BURUNDI: UNDERRATED COFFEE GEM

Often overlooked, Burundi is a hidden gem in the world of specialty coffees. This East African nation produces coffee that stands out for its exceptional quality and unique flavor profiles, grown mainly by smallholder farmers.

Every year Burundi confirms its reputation on the specialty coffee map with its super sweet, clean and often floral coffees. And you can taste that in the Microlot Gahahe!

FARMERS - KAYANZA REGION

In Burundi, the majority of coffee trees are of the Red Bourbon variety. Small farmers, with an average of only 250 trees per household, produce about 200 to 300 kilos of cherries annually. The harvest is carefully done by hand by the family, which contributes to the high quality and unique character of Burundian coffee.

PROCESSING - HONEY

The processing of coffee in Burundi is a painstaking process. As soon as farmers deliver their cherries, they are immediately sorted and checked for quality. After sorting, the cherries are pulped within 6 hours and then slowly dried on tables for 2 to 3 weeks. This careful process, including constant stirring and protection against rain and night moisture, guarantees even drying and maintenance of high quality.

ORIGIN - BURUNDI

Burundi's coffee, essential to its economy, is mainly grown by small farmers and is known for its high quality. The development of washing stations plays a crucial role in improving this quality. Burundi's coffee industry, driven by both state-owned and private enterprises, is focused on increasing efficiency and transparency in the supply chain.

ROSE AROMA, HIBISCUS RICHNESS, SOFT HONEY FINISH

The coffee from the Gahahe washing station is characterized by a rose aroma, the richness of hibiscus and a soft honey finish, with citrusy aromas and notes of berries and black tea in their Honey lots.
